Of Oaks and Memory

Of Oaks and Memory

A majestic white oak, keeping
watch on a forgotten pathway.
Its branches reaching heavenward
in a nonrandom eloquence
--a woodland cathedral of sorts--
a silent testimony of
something infinitely greater.
How many a traveler has
happened by this grand, ancient tree?
The tireless, faithful sentinel
--oaken keeper of forest secrets--
a reminiscence of things past.
With a passerby's tacit wish
--that simple hope: remember me.
