Passersby

Passersby

Two predators passing in a small field
in the woods of Painted Post
—a bear and a fisher cat.*
One going east. The other west.
Did they happen by this place at the same time,
perhaps sharing a begrudged glance
as each continued to hunt the night?
Hard sayin’.
The forest only ever leaves a hint of what she knows and has seen--
a flirt who only softly whispers, “If you only knew . . .”
Leaving a grander story for us to imagine
—to find—
In the darkest hollows.

*A fisher cat is not a feline, rather the first cousin to the wolverine.
